US Marine Corps to expand loitering, swarming munitions

MDN İstanbul

In an annual update to the US Marine Corps’ (USMC) Force Design 2030, the military branch expressed its plan to expand its arsenal of loitering munitions, influenced by their recent successful deployment in Ukraine.

During a press briefing, Brigadier General Stephen Lightfoot detailed the Corps’ plans to advance a suite of loitering, swarming munitions, designed to be launched from attack helicopters such as the AH-1 Cobra.

With backing from the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, the USMC will kick off the Long-Range Attack Munition project, aiming to rapidly cultivate and field an affordable, air-launched loitering, swarming munitions family.

According to the report, a second endeavor is underway, focusing on the development of a universal launcher for a family of ground-launched loitering munitions.

These initiatives mark a strategic shift from heavy-armored tanks and sizable infantry battalions towards more agile and lightweight drone squadrons. The changes reflect an adaptation to potential conflict scenarios with China and underscore the military’s commitment to evolving its tactics in response to geopolitical realities.
