Dutch Defense Ministry elaborates on evaluation process for new submarine contracts

MDN İstanbul

State Secretary for Defence Christophe van der Maat of the Netherlands Ministry of Defence has provided detailed information regarding the upcoming submarine contract award process. Notably, Naval Group, Saab Kockums, and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems are the competing entities for these Dutch submarine contracts.

In a letter to the House of Representatives, van der Maat explained the evaluation process and emphasized the critical role the new submarines will play in defining the future capabilities of the Dutch Navy.

The contract competition is a component of the Walrus-class replacement program, reflecting the necessity of submarines as effective weapon platforms. As per the “Netherlands Defence Market 2023-2028” report by GlobalData, the Netherlands is set to replace its existing four Walrus-class submarines. The upcoming submarines, expected to be diesel-electric, will come equipped with long-range missile capabilities.

Following the submission of tenders, an extensive evaluation process will be conducted until January 2024 to thoroughly assess each proposal. The provisional decision on the award will be made based on this evaluation, subsequent parliamentary debates, and final decision-making procedures.
