Offshore wind market competition in Asia

South Korea based Taihan Cable & Solution is pinning its hopes on its recently launched cable-laying vessel (CLV) to help the Asian country prevent competitors from entering the domestic offshore wind industry

Last week, Taihan held the commissioning ceremony of the 6,200-ton CLV Palos at the pier of its second submarine cable factory in Dangjin, after announcing the acquisition of what is said to be Korea’s only cable-laying vessel for the offshore wind market in December 2023. The event was attended by about 200 people, including the governor of Chungcheongnam-do and the mayor of Dangjin.

In addition, representatives from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, Korea Electric Power Corporation, Korea Wind Energy Industry Association, and various power companies, customers, and partner companies graced the ceremony with their presence. The vessel was purchased for approximately $38.4 million.

The ship is said to be the first CLV in Korea built for submarine cable laying. It can carry up to 4,400 tons of submarine cable in a single voyage. Taihan emphasizes that the Palos cable layer has “far superior” performance to cable laying barges (CLBs) converted from cargo barges.

The CLV is equipped with Dynamic Positioning 2 (DP2). It has a flat bottom, which allows it to operate in different locations regardless of water depth. Capable of reaching speeds of up to 9 knots, the vessel is described as having an “exceptionally stable and precise approach” to laying submarine cables, significantly outperforming CLBs, which rely on tugs and cannot respond effectively to changes in weather and currents.
