ITU serve to Turkish naval shipbuilding industry

MDN İstanbul

Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, Istanbul Technical University (ITU) has two departments – Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering and Ship and Ocean Technology Engineering. The departments have a wide variety of research and education interests in the fields of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. For instance, recently, the department of Ship and Ocean Technology Engineering has started a new postgraduate program – Offshore Engineering, which is the first program on the offshore engineering in Turkey. Regarding the experimental facilities, ITU has the only ship model testing laboratory (Ata Nutku Ship Model Testing Laboratory) in Turkey, measuring 160m x 6m x 4.5m in dimensions.

The faculty, recently, established a new ship emissions laboratory which is capable of measuring all the emissions from the ship engines, such as NOx, SOx, CO2, CO, particulate matters, etc.

A new experimental facility – a large cavitation tunnel is under construction and it will be completed in three years. This facility is supported financially by a defense project by Turkish Ministry of National Defense.

The Faculty of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, with its academic members and experimental facilities, has collaborate with the sector in different industry oriented projects. For instance, Turkish Shipbuilder’s Association, ASELSAN, Turkish shipyards are some examples for the organizations our faculty has collaboration with. The faculty collaborates with ASELSAN for a test ship design and its construction. The ship will serve as a test platform for ASELSAN products and also it will be used by ITU for research projects and as well as for practical training. On the other hand, ASELSAN and ITU also work together for developing new products.
