‘We are currently building complete steel decks of the third bridge’

MDN İstanbul

Gemak Group owns and operates 3 yards and 1 steel/pipe construction workshop. Group has 3 docks and can accommodate ships up to capesize vessels (300x53m max. dock size) while 2km of lay by berth space is available to accommodate abt. 12 ships at any given time.
Total number of ships calling Gemak Group is abt. 160 ships/year. Birol Uner, CEO of Gemak Group, shares information on the capabilities and projects of Gemak,  with the readers of MarineDeal News.
“Last 2-3 years, Turkish yards have become the address for more than 50% of the all vessels dry-docked and repaired in entire Mediterranean including Black Sea. Simply Turkish yards are now providing the best price/quality ration and the largest capacity in the region.
As Gemak Group our core business activity is “ship repairs and conversion” and at that perspective we are focusing on specific repair and conversion project those require strong engineering and QC skills apart from the routine docking and maintenance works those can be considered as our bread and butter.
Interesting repair and conversion projects successfully accomplished and currently under progress in our Gemak and TGE yards in 2014;
2x Suexmaz tankers and 12x Aframax tankers are dry-docked in 2014 till today, 3x Suction dredgers and 1x pipe burying (stone damping) vessel major repair and upgrade works
1x CO2 tanker conversion project is currently under progress. This is the third vessel of the similar conversion project after we have completed the first two in 2013.
1x drilling jack up rig (MODU) is currently under major repair and conversion to a mobile drilling and production rig (MODPU)
At the new-building side, we are nowadays focusing not on usual ships but more on industrial projects, or in other words mega structures, such as 4x steel shafts of Izmit Bay Bridge are fabricated, total abt.2000tons and successfully delivered to IHI Cooperation who is currently building the bridge.
Other very interesting project is the 3rd Bosporus bridge and we are currently building complete steel decks of the bridge which equals to some 47.000 tons of steel. We are able to handle such mega construction projects by joining the forces of our TGE yard, NETA fabrication yard and our new facility; GEMAK-ALTINOVA yard. Here below some brief information about 3rd Bosphorus bridge and the project;

General Information and Highlights
The 3rd Bridge, which is going to be built on the Bosphorus, Istanbul within the Northern Marmara Motorway Project executed by IC Ictas – Astaldi Consortium, is considered the future of transportation and commerce.
8 lanes of motorway and 2 lanes of railway will be located at the same level on the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge, which will be a product of professional engineering and advanced technology built by a team, most of whom are Turkish engineers. It will be among the most important bridges of the world with its aesthetic and technical features.
The bridge of firsts; the 3rd Bosphorus Bridge is going to be the widest suspension bridge in the world with a width of 59 meters and the longest spanning one that has a rail system on it, with a main span of 1408 meters. Another first of the bridge is that it is the suspension bridge with the highest tower of the world, with a height of more than 322 meters.

Gemak’s Share
Gemak Group, acting as subcontractor to Hyundai Engineering & Construction who is the solution partner of IC Ictas – Astaldi Consortium, is assigned to fabricate the steel decks of the bridge consists of 59x segments in different lengths. The total steel weight of segments is about 47,000 tons. The typical segment weight is about 830 tons.
Steel material is S460M and S355 plates in different thicknesses. The process begins with steel cut, beveling, pre-fabrication in NETA fabrication yard, panel fabrication in TGE yard and segment fabrication & coating in GEMAK-ALTINOVA yard. Upon completion of segment fabrication, segments will be transported to erection site in Bosphorus, using a “Deck cargo ship” having DP1 capability which is currently under construction at GEMAK main yard in Tuzla. Project is scheduled to be completed in 2015.

Segments under construction in Gemak-Altinova yard
With this project, Gemak Group proofs its capacity not only in ship building and repair projects but also in building mega structures. We aim to be more active in similar industrial projects as well as building, repair and conversion of offshore units and to be the driving force in our region.
